New hipster barbershop opens in Nottingham with homemade hair tonics inspired by grandfather's apothecary book

A grandfather's old apothecary book was the inspiration for a range of high-end home-made hair tonics and beard oils being sold at a new hipster barbershop in Nottingham.

Taking over an upstairs room in Hopkinson's vintage emporium, next to the railway station, The Dandy Gent offers deluxe beard re-styles, traditional wet shaves and dry cuts.

It is the third branch to open in the East Midlands since 2013, when former businessman Shane O'Shaughnessy brought the Dandy name to Derby.

Shane had learnt his trade as a boy from his grandfather David Keithley but after he left school he found there were no formal qualifications for barbering - only hairdressing.

Instead he started his own computer business in his 20s, but after more than a decade in the trade he decided it wasn't really for him and ultimately signed himself up for hair qualifications.

In 2005 Shane started a barbers and hair salon in Peel Street, Derby, and, in 2007, he took on a second down the road.

But it wasn't until 2013, after he decided to brew his own collection of high-end grooming products inspired by his grandfather's old apothecary book and closing his original branch, Shane re-branded as the Dandy Gent.

Now open Thursday, Friday, Saturday 10am - 6pm, prices start at £10 for a beard trim up to £22 for a traditional wet shave.
