New Highway Code rules say where drivers and cyclists have to let pedestrians cross

All drivers and cyclists have been warned about a new Highway Code rule.

Currently, road users should only give way to pedestrians who have started to cross the road into which they are turning.

However under new rules, people who are crossing on side roads and junctions have the right of way to do so.

The new Rule H2 of the revised code provides for priority to be given to pedestrians who are waiting to cross the road as well.

Therefore, if you are looking to turn into a side road or at a junction and a pedestrian is waiting to cross, you are expected to give way.

However, there are fears the new law could lead some people to put their lives at risk.

Peter Lorence, a serious injury lawyer at Irwin Mitchell, said: "We represent too many individuals and families whose lives have been shattered by death and serious injury on our nation’s roads, due to entirely avoidable collisions."

Peter said: "We’re concerned that this significant change poses risks to pedestrians who may assert their rights under the new rules, yet drivers may not be aware of this change.

"It is therefore important for all road users to be aware of the new rules, to ensure everyone’s safety and understanding."
