New hidden rooftop beer garden opens on Mansfield Road

'Living' picture frames bursting with succulents, a quirky entrance of mis-matched antique mirrors and 'electric-shock' benches, decorate the space of a new hidden rooftop beer garden, now open in Mansfield Road.

It's taken nearly five months of hard graft to convert what was basically a smoking area at The Golden Fleece into a real alfresco drinking escape. Aesthetic highlights included wooded seating singed using an electric current and a table hand-carved with the boozer's logo.

Officially opened over the Bank Holiday weekend, the garden is the latest in a string of improvements made to the pub since it was rescued from permanent closure by Angel Microbrewery owner and former Alley Cafe founder, Ben Rose back in December.

Having closed his vegan hangout last summer to concentrate on running The Angel, Ben told Nottinghamshire Live he had no intention of taking over another pub for at least another six months but said he couldn't stand by and do nothing.

A quick revamp at the time gave it a fresh coat of paint and bit of much-needed love which has now extended to the beer garden - and it is already proving popular with punters.

"It was really busy at the weekend. Even though the weather wasn't that great it was packed. Everyone thinks it's class," says pub supervisor Chai Larden.

In time there are plans for the outdoor space to host a pop-up makers' markets, live acoustic music and a cinema.

Plans are also underway to double the size of the garden, but realistically Chai says this will happen next summer.
