A new heat health alert has been issued for London with another heatwave forecast to hit at the weekend.
The yellow heat health alert has been issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), for the capital from 12pm on Saturday until 5pm on Wednesday.
It also covers the East Midlands, east, south-east and south-west England.
It comes as temperatures are forecast by the Met Office to hit 28C in London on Saturday, with 29C on Sunday, 31C next Monday and 30C next Tuesday.
According to the BBC’s longer-term forecast, the hot spell will continue all though next week with 30C on Wednesday, 32C on Thursday, 31C on Friday and 29C on Saturday.
It means that London could be in for an eight day heatwave.
Although Tony Wisson, Met Office deputy chief forecaster, said: “Although a return to heatwave conditions is looking increasingly likely for some areas, the likelihood of such extreme high temperatures or high levels of humidity as last week is currently low.”
The UKHSA has said within the warning area, minor impacts were likely across health and social care services because of the high temperatures, including increased use of healthcare services by vulnerable people and a greater risk to life to the same group.
It also warned of a potential increase in water-related incidents, including risks from cold water shock and drowning.
The new alert comes after a sweltering heatwave last week, during which the Met Office issued a rare red warning for extreme heat for parts of the country and the UKHSA put red heat health alerts in place.
The Met Office has confirmed it was the hottest June on record for England.
The UK set a provisional June temperature record of 37.7C on Friday – even higher than previously thought.
An official heatwave is declared in London when the temperature reaches a peak of at least 28C on three consecutive days.
