New headteacher announced at Hamilton College

Hamilton College has announced the appointment of their new headteacher who promises to make young learners the very best they can be.

Richard Charman will take the reins of the independent school on July 1. His appointment came after a “rigorous recruitment process”.

On accepting the role, Mr Charman said: “I feel honoured to be appointed as the next headteacher to lead Hamilton College into its exciting future.

“I share the vision and purpose of creating a centre of excellence, where learners can discover their talents and follow their own unique pathways to be the very best they can be.

“The strong values of Hamilton College support a strong foundation to deliver a family atmosphere to allow learners to grow through the 2 - 18 journey.”

Mr Charman joins Hamilton College after a 20-year tenure at the prestigious Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh.

He held the positions of head of department, director of sport and more latterly deputy head.

His contribution to Merchiston included the introduction of new academic subjects; the implementation of a new IT infrastructure and digital strategy; the launch of the leading tennis and golf academies as well as leading capital projects, fundraising and recruitment.

Mr Charman added: “I will continue to build on the many successes the school has already achieved and to lead Hamilton’s ambition to deliver a holistic education, where academic challenge is supported by excellent pastoral care and wider curricular opportunities.

“But most of all, I am looking forward to working with the learners, staff, parents, governors and the wider Hamilton College community to support our learners to grow in confidence, gain wisdom, become innovative thinkers and to ensure they act graciously and compassionately in all they do.”

Hamilton College is now looking forward to a new future after a difficult year during the pandemic, which came with its own interruptions to education across the country.

Chairman of the Board of Governors, Mrs Penny Simpson OBE said: “The school has been through an extraordinary time in the last 14 months and despite the challenges, has flourished.

“We are now ready to continue to the next chapter and after a rigorous recruitment process, I am delighted that Richard has accepted the role as Headteacher.

“The Board and I are eager to begin working closely with Richard and the school community is excited for him to begin his role.”
