New Hampshire shooting: 'Multiple injuries' after gunman opens fire in church

At least one person has been shot and multiple others believed to have been injured after a gunman opened fire in a church.

The incident happened at New England Pentecostal Ministries in Bridge Street, Pelham in New Hampshire, when a meeting about domestic abuse was taking place, it is understood.

Counter terrorism police say they are "closely monitoring" the situation.

Ambulances and dozens of other emergency services, including fire trucks, are the scene, while at least four people are said to have been injured.

The area has been sealed off with tape and one witness has described seeing "heavy police presence".

The shooter has since been apprehended and is in custody, according to local media.

A nearby hospital said they had received one patient from the scene.

Officials have only confirmed there is an "active investigation" and have not released any more details or said if or how many people have been shot.

Homeland Security and the New York Police Department Counter Terrorism Bureau said they are "closely monitoring the shooting incident at the New England Pentecostal church in Pelham, NH."

A "men and women meeting" for Domestic Abuse Month had been scheduled for 9.30am today, according to the church's website.

The Union Leader reported a "celebration of life" service for former ordained minister Luis Garcia was also due to be held at noon the church.

Mr Garcia was found shot dead inside his home on October 1.

WCVB reported one churchgoing who planned to attend the celebration of life received a call from his aunt saying “don’t come to the church, the Bishop has been shot.”

An FBI spokeswoman said: “The FBI is aware of the incident in Pelham, NH. We are coordinating with our state and local partners as expected and offering assistance, although none has been requested.”

New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu issued a statement on Twitter and said: "State officials are on scene assisting local first responders in the response and investigation of a shooting in Pelham, NH.

"While this remains a very active scene, the State of New Hampshire will provide all necessary resources to support the community and our local partners."

Meanwhile, an alert issued just before 4pm UK time on Twitter said: "(OOA) Pelham, NH *SHOOTING* Bridge St - Multiple people shot at a church, mutual aid Ambulances requested, no other information available at this time, scene is active - 10/12 - 10:45".

Another read: "Multi shooting Pelham NH- reported to be on Bridge St - multiple m/a en route."

The church describes itself as "committed to touching lives dramatically and bringing aid and deliverance to all people regardless of race, creed or color throughout all generations."

It adds: "Our church welcomes people from all parts of New England and the Northeast area.

"With strong foundations in the teachings of our Lord, our goal is to continue spread His word, educate our youth and work toward the betterment of our local community."

One shocked resident wrote on Twitter: "Never thought I would say this there was a shooting in my town this morning inside of a church attached to my daughter's kindergarten.

"Multiple people were shot I'm praying that they were no fatalities so glad my daughter is safe with me. Please pray for Pelham."
