New Greek services launch from Birmingham Airport

New services to Greece are due to launch from Birmingham Airport this summer.

Aegean Airlines will commence flying directly to the Greek capital Athens on June 3 which is a brand new route for the airport.

The operator will run a twice weekly service on both Wednesdays and Saturdays and will use an Airbus A320 aircraft with 174 seats on board.

Tom Screen, aviation director at Birmingham Airport, said: "We're excited to see the return of Aegean Airlines to Birmingham Airport with the launch of this new route to Athens.

"The connectivity out of Athens Airport is a real advantage for Aegean and will allow holidaymakers the opportunity to explore and enjoy more of the Greek islands, as well as destinations slightly further afield."

Roland Jaggi, chief commercial officer at Aegean Airlines, said: "We are delighted to be returning to Birmingham and with a new route to Athens which will provide UK passengers with even greater ease, convenience and accessibility to visit Greece via Midlands's largest airport."

In a separate announcement, Jet2 has also unveiled a string of new services to Greece taking its total number of destinations to 14 in total from its UK operations.

Its routes out of Birmingham Airport to Preveza, Santorini and Skiathos will all have additional capacity after previous announcements about their launch.

Preveza runs from May 24 to November every Sunday, Santorini every Tuesday from May 5 until October 27 and Skiathos from May 13 to October every Wednesday.

An additional Saturday service to Skiathos will launch from July 18.

Steve Heapy, chief executive of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays, said: "Since we started operating to Greece, our commitment to this fantastic country has been constant and unwavering.

"This announcement underlines that commitment, meaning that in summer 2020 we will fly over half a million extra holidaymakers to Greece and her islands."
