Glasgow A-listed building in city centre earmarked as new site for Tesco Express

Tesco is making plans to open a new store in a historic building on Glasgow’s Union Street.

The retail giant has lodged an application with Glasgow City Council to display signs on an A-listed building for a Tesco Express.

A letter submitted to the council said: “Tesco Stores Ltd are proposing to occupy the unit at 132 Union Street for a Tesco Express store. The site is currently in operation as a Co-Op convenience shop.”

The supermarket firm would take over the historical Ca’D’Oro building, which was built in 1872 as a four-storey warehouse.

A heritage statement lodged by RPS on behalf of Tesco said the property was constructed in a Venetian Renaissance style by John Honeyman. It sits in the Glasgow Central Area Conservation Area.

The statement said: “The replacement of the existing signage and fascia with new signage will continue the retail use and character of the building and have no impact on its architectural character.

"It will still be experienced and appreciated as an ornate, 19th century building, with its architectural features and decoration still evident.

"Although there will be some changes to the external appearance of the building, these will not affect its character, use or the ability to understand and appreciate the architectural interest of the building. The proposed works will therefore preserve the special architectural and historic interest of the listed building.”

The council has yet to make a decision on the application for advertisement and listed building consent.
