Holidaymakers keen to jet off to the sun from Glasgow when current restrictions on foreign travel ease in the future will have an exciting new location to choose from.
Airline Jet2 has announced Funchal in Madeira as a new city break destination from Glasgow Airport for both its winter 2021/22 and summer 2022 programmes.
The airline will operate flights to the capital of the Portuguese archipelago on a Monday year-round starting from November 1, with hotel packages - including a choice of 3 to 5-star hotels - also starting from the same date and on sale through Jet2CityBreaks.
The UK Government has not yet confirmed whether foreign holidays will be permitted from May 17 - the earliest possible date under the roadmap - or which destinations people can visit without self-isolating on their return.
Nicola Sturgeon did say last month during a covid update that it "may be the case that we have to endure restrictions on international travel for a bit longer, as the price we pay for much greater normality here in Scotland".
The First Minister also said then she hoped that an agreement on international travel rules could be struck by the four nations.
Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2.com: “We are continuing to see huge demand for Winter 21/22 and Summer 22 from Glasgow Airport, so we are adding Funchal to our Jet2CityBreaks offering to give customers and independent travel agents in the region even greater choice.
"The stunning city with its traditional Portuguese architecture, cosmopolitan dining and shopping scene and lively nightlife, means it has an endless list of attractions and experiences to keep everyone entertained.
"With a fantastic choice of flights and hotels on sale to Funchal from Glasgow Airport for Winter 21/22 and Summer 22, we know that the addition of Funchal to our city breaks portfolio will be welcome news to holidaymakers in Scotland looking to get away. It also expands our Madeira programme even further, adding to our already popular programme of flights and package holidays.”
Perched on a hill along the Garden Island’s southern coastline, Funchal is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal, full of colourful gardens, cobbled old streets, modern shopping malls, stylish clubs, and a cosmopolitan marina.
