New Ghostbusters: Jason Reitman to direct movie sequel as he follows in father Ivan’s footsteps

Jason Reitman has been announced as director of a new Ghostbusters reboot, expected to be released next year.

The Oscar-nominated filmmaker will step into the shoes of his father, Ivan Reitman, who directed the first Ghostbusters movie in 1984.

Reitman announced the news on Twitter, saying he had “finally got the keys to the car”.

Ivan Reitman directed Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver and Harold Ramis in the first Ghostbusters film and went on to direct a sequel in 1989.

The upcoming reboot is expected expected to be released in the summer of 2020, although further details have yet to be announced.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about the film, Reitman said: "I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a six-year-old visiting the set. I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans.

"This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the 80s happened in the 80s, and this is set in the present day.”

The new film marks Sony’s second attempt at rebooting the franchise, after the 2016 gender-swap Ghostbusters movie proved divisive with fans and performed poorly at the box office.

Reitman is known for his work on such films as Juno, Up In The Air and Tully, as well as recent release The Front Runner.
