New George Harrison woodland memorial to open by Allerton Towers

A new memorial devoted to George Harrison is set to be built in Allerton to mark the musician's 77th birthday.

The project, announced today by Liverpool City Council and the George Harrison Estate, will see the creation of a new memorial woodland in honour of the former Beatle.

The George Harrison Woodland Walk, will be located in Allerton on the Greenland site opposite Allerton Towers, close to where George was born and grew up .

The memorial will be located at the 12-acre greenland site opposite Allerton Towers (Colin Lane/Liverpool Echo)

The 12 acre greenland site is currently occupied by mature woodland and a meadow.

Upon completion, the memorial woodland will feature a number of artistic installations inspired by the life and lyrics of the Beatles star.

The council and the Harrison family are looking to encourage artists to create new artwork to feature in the garden.

The site will also feature a 'nature classroom' targeted at helping school children across the region learn about nature and the environment.

Olivia Harrison, George's wife, said: "George was an avid gardener who found solace and joy in being in the outdoors. I don't think there is any better way to commemorate him in Liverpool than with a garden which can become a place of tranquility and reflection for everyone.

"I am really looking forward to watching it change and grow over the coming years."

Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, said: "It has been one of my ambitions as mayor to find an appropriate way for us as a city to celebrate one of our most-loved sons, so I am overjoyed that at last we can announced the George Harrison Woodland Walk.

"The site is beautiful and the plans for the area in the coming months are really exciting. It feels right that at last we have a permanent memorial to celebrate George's life, loves and influence."

The site was purchased by Liverpool City Council in 2018 and work is set to begin in the coming months and should take around a year to complete.

The George Harrison Woodland Walk will formally open to the public in spring 2021.

Artists looking to submit design ideas to feature in the memorial woodland can find more information at www.cultureliverpool.co.uk/harrison
