New gelato shop to open in south side of Glasgow as plans move forward

Glasgow's south side is set to be treated to yet another delicious dessert option as a brand new gelato shop prepares to open its doors.

Work is coming along at La Gelatessa - the new store set to open on Nithsdale Road with the exterior now painted a baby pink and a poster reading 'what's the scoop?' up in the window.

There is still no opening date for the latest eatery in the area, but the team promises it will be coming soon.

In their latest social media post, La Gelatessa introduced the husband and wife duo behind the shop.

They said: "Whilst works are still ongoing at the shop, allow me to introduce ourselves. We are Chiara and Dave. Wife and husband duo who really REALLY dig gelato.

"Chiara, a proud Scots-Italian and professional baker of 10+ years, has always secretly fantasised about selling gelato for a living. When lockdown hit, she used her furloughed time wisely. She experimented with different recipes, focusing on seasonal produce and using her baking knowledge to harness as much flavour from the ingredient as possible (because synthetic flavouring, é no buono). She researched as much as she could about the good stuff.

"Along the way, realising that she could in fact turn her fantasy into reality. When restrictions lifted, she took herself to gelato university in Bologna (yes, it's real, the photo is proof!) to fill in the gaps and learn how the Italians do it. Because if it's gonna be done, it's gonna be done right. Now, finally with a premises, she cannot wait to serve up scoops to you fine folks.

"Dave, a proud Geordie and honorary Scot, is the business head. The man who loves spreadsheets almost as much as gelato. Dave also came to a realisation during lockdown. He realised that he could work his full time job as an engineer AND help start up a business in his spare time.

"Basically, he's a natural businessman, and we wouldn't be here if it weren't for this guy. Whilst Chiara was studying in Bologna, Dave spent his days doing R&D in one of the best gelato cities in the world. So he's learned a thing or two about quality. You might not see him in the shop so much, but if you do, he'll probably be in the kitchen serving as chief gelato taster.

"So, that's us in a nutshell. Hopefully not too long until we can meet you!"

We can't wait to try out their gelato offerings when they open their doors!
