New Gay Byrne documentary to tell story of his relationship with fans over 60 years of broadcasting

A new documentary will reveal the stories behind thousands of letters written to broadcasting legend Gay Byrne.

Gaybo regularly received letters from the public, and RTÉ producers said their archives are "bursting" with boxes of letters from people who wrote to Gay to tell their stories.

“They wrote to him to complain, to seek help, share information and advice, or simply to publicise their invention, band, business, or cause", the national broadcaster said.

“Their stories are often funny and touching and many tell a tale of a more innocent Ireland.

“But there are many letters, too, that detail immense personal challenges, poverty and marginalisation."

'Dear Gay', which is set to be released in October, lifts the lid on the legendary broadcasters' relationship with his fans and the changing face of Ireland over his 60 years in broadcasting.

Producers said people wrote letters to Gay sharing personal stories which they sometimes couldn’t even tell their best friends or family members.

Such stories lifted the lid on subjects such as domestic abuse, depression, alcoholism, divorce, abortion, forced adoptions, homosexuality, clerical and institutional abuse and more.

RTE is asking members of the public who wrote to Gay’s radio or television show over years, to get in touch if they have an interesting story to tell.

Contributors are asked to log on to rte.ie/gaybo and fill in the form, or write a letter addressed to Dear Gay, RTÉ, Donnybrook, Dublin 4 .
