New garda survey reveals public think sex offences should be number one priority

Sex offences should be the top policing priority for the Gardai, according to a new survey.

Robbery, illegal weapons and human trafficking were also revealed as high on the list of public concerns.

The force polled 6,000 people about their attitudes towards crime and policing in Ireland for its Garda Public Attitudes Survey 2019.

Of those surveyed, 261 were victims of crime, with 30 stating that they had been a victim of crime on more than one occasion.

The victimisation rate for 2019 is 4.4%, a decrease from 6% in the 2018 survey.

John Twomey, deputy commissioner policing and security, said: "It is very welcome to see there were fewer people concerned about crime and a decrease in the victimisation rate last year.

"The benefit of our approach of policing by consent and in partnership with communities can also be seen in that the public strongly believes we would treat them and others fairly and with respect."

The survey found 80% or 206 of the 261 victims, reported their most recent crime to the Gardai.

Of those victims, 45% were more likely to worry about being a target of injury or theft than those who have not been a victim of crime.

More than half of those surveyed do not worry about becoming a victim of crime.

And 18% of people believe local crime was a "serious” or "very serious” problem.

Some 55% of those asked felt the Garda presence was not enough in their local area, a decrease from the 2018 figure of 61%.

But satisfaction with the Gardai remains high at 80%, according to the survey.

Trust in An Garda Síochána is at 91%, with respondents to the 2019 survey saying they have a medium to high level of trust in the organisation.

Just over half of crime victims felt information received from Gardai during their investigation was satisfactory, an increase of 6% on 2018.

Teens aged 16 and 17 were also surveyed for the third year running.

Gardai said their inclusion was "crucial" to understand their experience of crime and victimisation.

The survey found an overwhelming 85% were "satisfied" or "very satisfied" with the Gardai.

Deputy Commissioner Twomey added: "The perception of An Garda Síochána among young people is also very positive, with trust and satisfaction levels remaining high among that age group.

"It is vital that we work hard as an organisation to maintain this.”

The survey was conducted by Dublin-based Amárach Research on behalf of An Garda Síochána.
