New Galloway's CatStrand host Glenkens Food Day as part of first Glenkens Food Month

Food lovers have been in their element in the Glenkens in recent weeks.

A whole host of tasty events have been taking place as part of the first Glenkens Food Month.

That continued on Saturday with Glenkens Food Day at the CatStrand in New Galloway.

There was a children’s food workshop as well as cooking demos and classes with Castle Douglas chef Tony Budde and in the gallery people were able to hear about keeping happy hens, how to make gardens bee friendly with beekeeper Barry Irving and a talk from Keith Irving of Irvings bakery. Earlier in the day there had been the regular farmers’ market in Dalry and foraging for food in the walled garden at Garrick Estate.

New Galloway Community Enterprises have donated the time of community engagement worker Sam Rushton for the month with funding coming from the Galloway Glens Landscape Partnership and the Scottish Government’s Connect Local Regional Food Fund.

Sam said: “All the events that we have had so far have been very well attended.

“We are hoping to generate enough money to turn it into an annual event.

“We are aiming to encourage people to find out about their food and history as well as promoting local and seasonal produce.”

Among the events still to come is a Food Month Festival from 1pm on Saturday in New Galloway park, providing the chance to enjoy good food, drink and music.

At 7pm on Monday there is a Ready Steady Cook contest in the CatStrand with the grand finale a ceilidh at Balmaclellan Village Hall on Saturday, September 28.

Tickets for these and other events are available at the CatStrand and through the Facebook page.
