New Frome homes set for former Cuprinol Somerset factory site

A development providing 25 new homes on a former factory site in Somerset looks set to go ahead.

Housebuilder Persimmon has secured a resolution to grant planning permission for the project on brownfield land in Frome, which was once the location of wood treatment brand Cuprinol’s plant in the town, which closed in 2001.

The scheme off Adderwell Road will include a mix of one to three-bed properties, of which eight will be transferred to a social housing provider for rent and shared ownership for the purposes of housing local people.

A spokesperson for the developer told BusinessLive the approval is subject to the signing of a Section 106 Agreement with Somerset Council, once contributions to the local community have been finalised.

BusinessLive understands that, subject to the completion of the agreement, Persimmon’s Wessex division will pay around £240,000 towards local education and almost £30,000 for NHS services. The company will also contribute £35,000 towards public open spaces.

Persimmon Homes' Wessex managing director, Julian Roper, said: "We're delighted to have secured this positive decision on our scheme in Frome. The development on brownfield land off Adderwell Road will provide a wide range of high-quality new homes designed for local people, especially young families and first-time buyers, who otherwise might struggle to get onto the housing ladder.

"Every home will be equipped with air source heat pumps and electric vehicle charging points, while the site will also include biodiversity enhancement measures such as bird and bat boxes and wildflower planting, as well as initiatives to encourage sustainable travel including cycle stores and green travel vouchers.”

Revised proposals for the development were put forward last year, after concerns were raised by town councillors and Mendip District Council's planning officers about how suitable the site was for development, and how the risk of flooding would be mitigated.

The site is adjacent to the former Butler, Tanner & Dennis printworks site on Caxton Road, where Acorn Property Group is developing a £45m neighbourhood of more than 150 new homes.
