New Fred West documentary delves into the lives of Glasgow victims and serial killer's life here

By Laura Ferguson

The lives of three Scottish women murdered by notorious serial killers Fred and Rosemary West are to be examined in a new documentary series.

Produced by Glasgow based production company IWC Media, it will focus on Fred West's first wife Catherine 'Rena' Costello, who was from Coatbridge, her daughter Charmaine, and good friend Anne McFall.

All three of the women were murdered by the Wests - Anne in 1967, and Rena and Charmaine in 1971.

The documentary will focus on whether clues were missed during West's time in Scotland, as well as delving into the lives of the victims - and Glaswegians who may have known them are asked to come forward and share their stories.

Rena Costello was born in Coatbridge in 1944, where her family lived on Calder Street. When she married West in 1962, the couple’s first home was on Hospital Street in the town.

They later moved to Savoy Street in Glasgow's Bridgeton and then to McLellan Street in Kinning Park with their two daughters (though Charmaine was not West's biological child).

West drove a Mr Whippy ice cream van for a living. Rena later lived alone on Arden Street in Maryhill and worked as a clippy on the buses.

Anne, born in 1949, grew up in Parkhead, where she lived on Malcolm Street with her mother and brother and went to school at St Michael’s Primary. She also spent time at Nazareth House in Aberdeen and later worked at Livingstone Industrial clothing factory.

Producers at IWC Media are aiming to learn more about the lives of Rena and Anne and are looking to speak to people who may have known them.

The company told Glasgow Live: "IWC Media, a Glasgow based production company, is working with a national broadcaster on a documentary series which will focus on the life stories of Rena, her daughter Charmaine and friend Anne, all three of whom were murdered by the Wests.

"The series will also investigate whether clues were missed regarding Fred West’s criminal behaviour during his time in Scotland and how Rena and Anne came to cross paths with him.

"We want to more about the lives of Rena and Anne and are keen to hear from people who may have known them. Did you work with Anne at Livingston textiles in the east end? Were you neighbours with Rena Costello Coatbridge or the south side of Glasgow? If so, we would be keen to hear from you."
