New forensics in teen death

A re-enactment of the death of a 17-year-old Myanmar girl, earlier ruled a suicide by police, has been held in Ratchaburi after a fresh post-mortem forensic report contradicted the findings of a report issued by a local hospital.

Ban Pong police re-enacted the incident at house No 15/13 on Pak Rad Road in tambon Ban Pong on Monday evening after a Central Institute of Forensic Science (CIFS) autopsy on the girl's body failed to match findings from a Ban Pong Hospital examination of the body at the scene.

The follow-up investigation was launched after the mother and an older sister of the girl -- a Myanmar maid believed to have shot herself at her employer's house on Aug 6 -- sought help from the Crime Suppression Division (CSD) late last month.

According to the family, there were several questions left unanswered. These include the origin of two spent shells found next to the body and the apparent gunshot to the girl's right temple despite her being left-handed. The petition prompted the CSD to exhume the girl's body for a more detailed post-mortem.

Krissana Sapdet, deputy chief of Provincial Police Region 7, said the trajectory of the shot as ascertained by the CIFS differed from that derived from an inspection at the scene.

Pol Maj Gen Krissana said each of the girl's temples sustained one gunshot wound. However, the hole in the right temple was smaller than the one on the left. Originally, investigators presumed the bullet was fired through the right temple and exited through the left, which caused the larger wound on that side.

However, the new report suggests that the contrary was possible, and a shot from close range could have caused the larger entry wound, which suggests the girl could have used her left hand after all. Further forensic examinations of the fractured bones is required, said Pol Maj Gen Krissana. Police also examining girl's phone records on the day of her death, he said.
