New food business to be built next to South Shields Wetherspoons

A disused parcel of land in South Shields town centre could soon house a new food business after proposals were approved by planning chiefs.

Back in 2017, outline plans were lodged with South Tyneside Council to redevelop land adjacent to the Wetherspoons pub The Wouldhave, off Mile End Road.

This included erecting a new single-storey building “for the sale of hot and cold food, for consumption on and off the premises.”

Although the outline application was approved the following year, a reserved matters application was still needed to allow the development to progress.

Submitted in May 2021, the reserved matters bid included detailed designs, scale drawings and the layout of the new building proposed for the site.

Following consultation on the plans, South Tyneside Council’s planning department approved the application on June 25, 2021.

Although the future operator is not named in planning documents, floor plans show how the building would be subdivided.

This includes space for indoor seating, a food preparation area and pantry, a servery and customer toilet facilities.

A planning application adds that some summer outdoor seating would be provided and “enclosed by a glass balustrade from the public footway.”

Under planning conditions, developments normally have to be brought forward within a three-year period.
