New five-mile cycle route completed across Bristol

A new, five-mile cycle route that will connect north east Bristol with the city centre has been opened.

It is called the Frome Valley Greenway, and has been linked together to provide a walking and cycling route into the city from the University of the West of England, through Stapleton, Frenchay and Harry Stoke, via Eastville Park and now Broom Hill.

The route has been in sections for a while, but upgrades at several locations now mean the council has announced it is complete.

The upgrades, funded by the Cycle Ambition Fund, include a new, largely two-way segregated cycle lane between Broom Hill and Eastville Park, a new cycle path through the UWE Glenside campus and new parallel crossing points on Frenchay Park Road and on Broom Hill itself.

“This is more clear evidence of our administration’s commitment to sustainable transport,” said the council’s transport chief Kye Dudd.

“It’s great to see these upgrades complete a key route in the north fringe of the city and provide more traffic-free options through green spaces and safer crossings whether people are travelling by foot or bike.

“Re-shaping transport in Bristol is a strong theme in our One City Plan and I hope people are encouraged to walk more and try cycling by our work to provide safer and more accessible routes across the city.

“In addition to the cycling improvements, bus stops have been upgraded in Broom Hill and Blackberry Hill along with a new road layout, designed to improve safety for all road users,” he added.
