New figures show at least 13 people have died from coronavirus in Salford so far this month

The coronavirus death toll continues to climb in Salford as 13 more deaths have been recorded so far this month

The figures bring the total number of coronavirus-related deaths in Salford to 159, since the figures began on March 1 to May 9.

The infection rate in Salford has also skyrocketed to 339.6 per 100,000 people - way above England's average rate of 242.9 per 100,000 according to government figures.

This month's number of deaths reached a peak on Saturday May 2 when five deaths were reported, according to figures from the Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust.

But hundreds more have died at care homes and in their own homes across the region since the outbreak started.

Statistics detailing how many people have died from the virus outside hospital are only released once a week.

Although the number of deaths in the region's hospitals seems to be dropping, the number of deaths in our care homes rose again last week.

The update comes as the government issues new guidance on its plans to ease current coronavirus lockdown restrictions in the UK.

Mr Johnson announced to the nation on Sunday evening that a phased reopening of schools and non-essential shops in England could potentially begin from June 1 if transmission can be reduced.

Mr Johnson said in his address to the nation that people who cannot work from home should be “actively encouraged” to return to their jobs this week.

He also granted unlimited exercise in England from Wednesday.

People will be allowed to sunbathe or chat in English parks with one other person from a different household as long as two-metre distancing is maintained.

So far 36,700 people have died in the UK after contracting coronavirus.

A total of 1,334,770 people have now been tested, of which 219,183 have tested positive for Covid-19.
