New figures reveal the most popular baby names in West Lothian for 2019

Sophie and Thomas have been named as the most popular baby names in West Lothian for the past year.

The data for 2019, released by the National Records of Scotland, showed that in the county 15 baby boys were born with the name Thomas and 21 newborn girls were named Sophie.

Nationally Jack and Olivia were most popular for the third year in succession but in West Lothian they came in third and second on the list.

The rankings for boys in West Lothian are: Thomas (15), Leo and Oliver (13), Alfie, Jack and Mason (12) and Charlie, Harris, James, Noah and Oscar (11).

For girls: Sophie (21), Grace, Isla, Lucy and Olivia (16), Ava and Ellie (14) and Aria (13), Ella and Freya (12) and Emily, Harper and Robyn (11).

Popular culture can influence parents when naming children and Thomas might be trending in West Lothian due to the character Thomas Shelby on the hit show Peaky Blinders.

Alan Ferrier, Head of Demographic Statistics at National Records of Scotland said: “Jack and Olivia continue to be the most popular baby names in Scotland, however, this year, over 5,000 unique baby names were registered, which suggests that parents may be striving for originality and individuality when naming their children.

“Looking outside the top 100 names, it’s interesting to see the impact that popular culture is having on how parents name their children.

“More boys than ever are now called Ezra, which may be a result of the popularity of singer George Ezra.

“The Peaky Blinders trend has continued outside the top 100 names, the latest statistics show a continued rise in the number of babies named Cillian following the launch of the hit TV show and star actor Cillian Murphy, the names Polly and Chester have also increased in popularity in this time.”
