Roath Residents' Action Group is calling for help to put on a local festival to raise money for the community.

Chair of the group, Martin Gower, is circulating a leaflet to residents notifying them of plans to put on a new music and culture event in May in Shelley Gardens and the Gate on Keppoch Street. The proceeds of the event will go towards improving the local environment and projects in the community.

The leaflet asks residents to get involved – looking for local singers, songwriters photographers, poets and artists to come forward. The group is also seeking help from local bakers to produce cakes for the 'Home Bakes' table, as well as people to donate worn clothes for and unwanted books for the 'Worn Again' table.

'Roath Reflections' will be a memory wall of the area – and residents are asked to send in their stories and comments on how the area could improve.

There will also be a stall at the festival called 'Hello Roath' which will celebrate all the languages spoken in the area.

Residents have also been asked to identify areas for improvements in the area and suggestions for what to do with the money.

If you want to get involved with the festival or get in touch email roathresidents@googlemail.com.

Last year, Roath saw the arrival of its first arts festival - Made in Roath treated residents to a weekend of craft, workshops and performance at public venues and on the streets.

Plasnewydd councillor Rodney Berman said:

"This is an excellent initiative which I am very pleased to see being taken forward. I hope it will be successful and that it will help to create more of a community spirit amongst local residents.

"Other parts of the city have annual festivals and so it would be great to see something similar established in Roath. We did have a massive street party in City Road back in 2005 to help celebrate Cardiff's centenary but nothing much since then. As such, I am grateful to those involved for working to get this off the ground."

Roath Residents' Action Group is a not-for-profit non-political volunteers group which works together in improve the locality.
