New 'favourite' day for Ireland's extra Bank Holiday emerges as some label it the 'only option'

Momentum is growing behind calls for Ireland's new Bank Holiday to fall around St Brigid's Day in February.

Some TDs and many workers have suggested the day would be perfect to break up the first few months of the year, with no Bank Holiday until Paddy's Day after New Years.

The Government is said to be at an advanced stage of talks for the new holiday but no date has been hinted at by the decision makers just yet.

Speaking earlier this week, Senator Erin McGreehan said: "I think the only option for a bank holiday is to honour #louth native St Brigid. The first Monday in February would be a perfect day for such an incredible woman."

Jillian Van Turnhout agreed, tweeting: "The idea of a Lá Fheile Bhríde (St. Brigid's Day) bank holiday around 1 February sounds like a great idea to me - Between Christmas and St. Patricks Day is so dark and long without a break. Plus, it would be a holiday named after a woman."

While another social media user added: "The most obvious day for a bank holiday is St. Brigid's Day. January 1st to St. Patrick's Day is a slog. It's also the Celtic festival of Bealtaine, the coming of spring."

Whatever the decision, it is likely to be unveiled close to Budget time which is now just two weeks away.

Ministers Paschal Donohoe and Michael McGrath are reported to have met on Tuesday night with a "super Bank Holiday" - one with a Friday and Monday off - ruled out.
