OSAKA -- A pop-up store specializing in Space Invaders opened in Osaka on Thursday, marking the 40th anniversary of the arcade game that was all the rage in the 1970s.
The store is the first of its kind and will operate until Jan. 27 next year. Opened by video game maker Taito Corp., it features games involving players' interactive physical movements to attract young people.
The store has English- and Chinese-speaking staff to assist foreign customers.
Four types of games are available. Noborinvaders, for example, combines bouldering and Space Invaders -- players hold on to protrusions from a wall and use their limbs to attack and defeat space aliens projected on the wall.
Arkinvaders is played by kicking the image of a ball projected on the floor to counter the enemy's advance. Visitors can also buy original T-shirts and other goods based on the video game.
Space Invaders is "a game that can be played by people of any generation and nationality. It has even more potential for growth," said Taito Chairman Koichi Ishii.
Admission is free, but visitors pay 600 yen per play and 2,000 yen to play all four games.
