Family history website Findmypast is to trial a small number of pop-up shops on historic UK high streets, with Newcastle being one of them.
Designed especially for family history lovers, the pop-up on Nelson Street will welcome both experienced researchers and help newbies get started on their family tree. Touch screens will be installed across the café with free access to Findmypast’s expert hint and tips content and leading tree building software to help users get further with their family history faster than ever before.
Millions of Northumberland county records and historical newspapers will be available to locals to browse, ensuring colourful details and stories from the past aren’t missed. There will also be free WiFi and power points for those who wish to bring along their own laptops and while away the day.

In line with the playful twist on their name, the FindMyPasty shops will serve traditional pasties (meat, vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan), alongside fairtrade coffee and a wide selection of teas. Customers are also welcome to bring their canine companions as water and treats will be provided to keep their pets entertained.
Mary McKee, head of content publishing operations at Findmypast, said: “This is an exciting new venture for Findmypast and we can’t wait to see if this trial will be a success. The Findmypasty pop-up shops will give even more people the chance to discover their ancestors’ stories.
“We’ve chosen this area of Newcastle for its rich and colourful history, and we hope those surroundings will inspire people to delve into our records. I’d encourage everyone in the local area to pop by for a spot of lunch and bring along your family history research – it's the perfect way to spend an afternoon."
The 20 pop-ups will be opening around the country in May and will be available for a limited, three-month trial. In Newcastle, a vacant unit on Nelson Street has been selected as the location for FindMyPasty. Members of Findmypast will get a 10% discount on all food and drink.
