New family attraction opens in Notts with scarecrows, mud houses and elf workshops

A working Notts farm has swung open its barn doors to the public for the first time amid plans to transform the site into a new family attraction offering lots of wholesome fun.

Scarecrow making, mud house building, foraging and elf workshops are among the events already on the calendar at The Old Barn, Field Farm, Rolleston.

Grown-ups need not feel left out either with some adult-only activities planned including Christmas wreath making, fall floristry and summer flower basket arranging.

On arrival, refreshments, a tour of the farm, a light homemade lunch and time in the 'mud kitchen' are all included in the price of each workshop. Extra siblings can attend at a discounted price.

The scarecrows day gives a lesson in how to make a child-sized scarecrow to take home.

Enchanted worlds workshop involves a walk around the farm to forage for items to create a magical keepsake to take away.

And the mud houses event includes making and baking mud bricks to build a mini mud house.

Prices start at £18 and events can be booked at theoldbarnatfieldfarm.weebly.com.

The new family attraction officially launched on June 2 with a Peppa Pig-themed Muddy Puddle walk which raised more than £120 for Save the Children.

Helen Whatling says: “We were delighted that so many families could join us for our opening event, and to raise money for Save the Children.

"The children really enjoyed stomping around the farm, finding Peppa and her friends, and carrying out some wonderful crafts with us.”

Growing up on Field Farm, an arable farm growing a wide range of crops and vegetable for sale at local markets, gave Helen a lifelong love of the great outdoors.

With two children aged one and four, she began to think about fun ways to get them involved, which inspired her to turn one of the field’s old barns into a creative workshop space.

“I wanted to celebrate the seasons with a calendar of creative activities here on Field Farm, and invite families to come and join in. Because we’re a working arable farm, we’ll be inspired by the cycle of sowing, planting and harvesting the bright, colourful and tasty crops we grow."
