A new face-to-face service for veterans is starting in the Hunter, following calls for a return to more in-person access to services after they were wound back during the COVID-19 pandemic last year.
RSL NSW and RSL LifeCare is stationing an experienced claims advisor at the RSL sub-branch at Souths Merewether on a fortnightly basis to help veterans who want an advocate as they access services.
The move comes after some Hunter veterans earlier this year criticised a push by the Department of Veterans Affairs to do more communication online and make face-to-face contact by appointment only in Newcastle.
RSL LifeCare general manager of veteran services Nicki Young said the initiative at Souths Merewether would be "veteran-centric" and "recovery-focused".
"I know this service will be welcomed by the many veterans based across the Hunter who are looking for local support from someone who understands the unique needs of veterans and their families," she said.
RSL NSW sub-branch president Phil Winney said the services provided by LifeCare were just one example of how RSL NSW sub-branches supported veterans and their families across Newcastle and the Hunter.
"This pilot program complements the services and support delivered by RSL sub-branch volunteers who understand the significant demand for Hunter-based support, and we welcome the collaboration with RSL LifeCare," Mr Winney said.
Hunter-based veterans can book a face-to-face appointment by calling 8088 0388 or by contacting their local RSL sub-branch.
