New exhibition looks at homelessness - with photos from people with experience of rough sleeping

A new photography exhibition in Manchester Cathedral will shed a light on homelessness in the city — with pictures taken by people who’ve experienced life on the streets.

The exhibition, called ‘Home’, opens on Saturday (July 9) with a launch event (12pm-2pm) in the Cathedral. The collective last exhibited in the city in 2018.

It has been created by collective People Of The Streets, which has 10 members that have ‘lived experience of homelessness in Greater Manchester’. Photos were taken in June on disposable cameras.

One of those photographers who know what life on the streets can be like is Matt Kidd. “The life for many homeless people means being constantly overwhelmed by toxic stress and trauma,” he explained. “Many people with safety, security and wellness take it for granted and will never be able to truly appreciate how hard it is to manage your life when you don’t have access to these things.

“No-one should ever be viewed as intentionally homeless; we should instead understand what unrealistic demands and challenges the system put in place which led to them losing their home.”

Dean Govender Rodgers, of Manchester Cathedral, added: “Having a home of one’s own makes all the difference to our lives. This exhibition calls us to reflect deeply on the need to ensure that every person has a place they can call home where they can live in comfort and safety and flourish as human beings made in the image of God.”

‘Home’ will be open until July 17 at the Cathedral and the Royal Exchange, before moving to Ashton-Under-Lyne Metrolink station from July 21-23.
