New exhibition lifts lid on fascinating history of lighthouses throughout Scotland

A new exhibition charting the history of Scottish lighthouses has opened in Saltcoats.

“Following the Lights’ will run at the North Ayrshire Heritage Centre in Kikrgate until Wednesday, June 29.

The exhibition features a collection of rare and fascinating lighthouse artefacts, memorabilia, original letters, paintings and photographs amassed by lighthouse enthusiast Peter Gellatly, a lecturer from Lanarkshire.

It also celebrates the dedicated people who maintain lighthouses and shines the spotlight on some of the most famous pioneers of lighthouse engineering history, including the family of Robert Louis Stevenson who were Scottish lighthouse designers and engineers.

Highlights also include colour video footage of Clyde Lighthouse Trust lighthouse keepers and their families at Little Cumbrae Lighthouse, a detailed history of life on board Scotland’s Last Lightship — North Carr — and original signed books, photographs, and letters by the famous Stevenson Engineers.

Rhona Arthur, head of service (connected communities) said: “If you are interested in learning more about the history of these remarkable buildings or discovering some unique lighthouse curiosities while celebrating the admirable work of the lighthouse service, why not pop along with friends and family and help us to celebrate the work and legacy of our lighthouse service.”

The exhibition is open on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9.30am to 1pm and 2pm to 4.30pm.

It's a partner event for Year of Stories 2022 with Visit Scotland – celebrating the captivating stories of lighthouses, light vessels and Stevenson’s famous Lighthouse Engineers.
