New exhibition celebrates centenary of women police officers in the Met

Images of London’s serving women police officers go on display today to mark the 100th anniversary of the first women joining the Met.

The photographs show women in a variety of front line roles, from firearms to public order officers.

They were taken by photographer Christopher Jonas who was given access to more than 24 units of the Met.

Among the officers pictured are Pc Marcia White, seen in riot gear at the Met’s specialist public order training centre in Gravesend, Pc Lucy Arnold of the mounted branch, Pc Charlene Pierre and Sgt Sarah-Jayne Davies, a member of the marine policing unit.

The Met has recently launched a recruitment drive aimed particularly at women, who make up 27 per cent of the force. There are 7,881 women officers in the Met, with about 387 in senior roles.

The exhibition at City Hall will run until the end of May.
