New ‘events space’ with live music venue planned for Merseyside town

A new live music venue could be coming to Birkenhead, in plans put to Wirral Council.

Katie Sutton, from Bridge Street Holdings, is applying to create “an events space including a venue for live music” at a site currently known as Arc House on Taylor Street, according to the design and access statement.

The document, put together by Bryson Architecture, gives a picture of how the Birkenhead venue might function.

It read: “The proposal seeks to achieve the best use of the site, a cohesive development to create an entertainment venue serving food and drinks to compliment the adjacent Molly’s Chambers.”

The statement added: “The ground floor of the building will be utilised as the event space, bar areas, toilet facilities and storage areas.

“The first floor will be accommodation for the venue manager and also office areas for the running of the business.”

Bryson Architecture said the venue will provide leisure facilities for local businesses, colleges and museums in the area.

The statement continued: “Wirral transport museum and heritage tramway, which is located opposite to the site and has a track to the rear of the site, has expressed a desire to utilise the proposed facility as location for presentations and seminars, which it is hoped will increase the footfall to the museum.”

On the appearance of the scheme, the design and access statement was clear that it will remain “in-keeping” with the current building.

One issue which could be tricky for Bridge Street Holdings is that it will need to get Wirral Council to accept that a change of use is needed at the site, as the building is currently used as a retail premises trading in welding engineering supplies.

But the statement added: “The premises at Arc House no longer serves its purpose as a trading and storage hub for the business and has slowly declined due to neglect over a five-year period.”

The document said the business has been trying to sell the building and the only interested party is Bridge Street Holdings, the applicant that wants to turn it into an events venue.

Even though the site is within a primarily industrial area, there are non-industrial businesses which operate within the area.
