New erosion threat to former Stockton rubbish tip

Severe coastal erosion has threatened to tear open the remains of the former Stockton rubbish tip.

At least five metres of sand has been stripped from the north end of the beach in recent days, exposing the geofabric used to line the area.

The tip, which was used until the early 1970s, was last exposed in 2018.

About 8,000 tonnes of waste from the tip was transported to Summerhill waste management centre.

A Crown Lands spokesman said on Tuesday that work would be undertaken as soon as possible to secure the site with additional geotextile fabric and sandbags.

Planning is also underway to excavate buried waste from the site as the next step.

Hunter Water, which owns land adjacent to the former tip is also looking to secure the foreshore.
