New era for Dumfries Burns Howff Club as secretary retires

Dedicated David Smith has retired as secretary of Dumfries Burns Howff Club after nearly 50 years of service.

He thought he would do the job for a year or so after taking over from David Miller in 1972.

But he remained in post until this week when he handed over the chain of office to the grandson of his predecessor.

Mr Smith, 76, who joined the Burns Howff Club in 1968, said: “I was asked if I wanted to take on the role and I thought I would just do it for a short while, maybe a year. That was in 1972.

“I’ve enjoyed my time very much and there were some challenges along the way.

“I met many fantastic characters over the years that have become lifelong friends.”

The new secretary, David Miller, has been involved in the club for 20 years and served as the club president in 2008.

He said: “My grandfather started in the post in the late 50s or early 60s and held it for more than 10 years.

“I’m looking forward to the role. It is one of the most successful Howff Clubs and it’s important we keep it going.”

Local farrier Bob Kennedy was elected as the club’s new president at their recent annual general meeting held in Locharbriggs Community Centre on June 16 by courtesy of past president John Caskie.

Mr Kennedy takes over from Rab Walker, who was in office for two years due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Graeme Galloway was elected junior vice president, with Peter Hutchison as senior vice president and William Johnston as honorary treasurer.

The AGM would normally have been held in the club’s home, the Globe Inn, but it is currently closed.

Mr Miller, 67, added: “We’re looking forward to getting back to normal with meetings face to face.

“Our links with the Globe Inn are legendary and we can’t wait for us to get back inside.”
