New England Patriots release former Ohio State kicker Mike Nugent

The New England Patriots are making a change at kicker yet again. This time it’s at the expense of former beloved Ohio State field-goal kicker Mike Nugent.

The 37-year old Nugent originally won a competition after week five to replace injured staring kicker Stephen Gostkowski, but struggled to meet the high standards of an NFL. He made 5 of 8 field goals, but missed 2 of 4 in less-than-ideal conditions against the Cleveland Browns Sunday.

Shortly after the news, the Patriots signed 34-year old Nick Folk who was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2018 after struggling himself. He last kicked for the Arizona Hotshots of the AAF, but was out of work because of the immediate folding of that experiment.

Who knows if the veteran Nugent will get another shot, but for now, he’s out of work looking for a job again. Will this be the last we see of Nugent in the NFL?
