New England Patriots could select quarterback in NFL Draft due to "support" issue

The New England Patriots continue to be linked with a quarterback ahead of tonight's first round of the NFL Draft.

Last week, the Pats met with Kentucky quarterback Will Levis, who had been rumoured to be the potential number one overall pick, before the Carolina Panthers made their move up the board, where they are expected to take Bryce Young. Levis is an explosive athlete with a huge arm, while also bringing the ability to win as a running threat.

These are qualities that Jones does not possess, who is the more accurate quarterback of the two. Jones thrived in his first year with the Patriots in 2021, but hugely struggled last season.

This lead to rumours that Jones could be available via trade. Throughout the last six weeks, news has emerged that the Patriots could look to move on from their former first-round pick, after head coach Bill Belichick only added fuel to the fire when he refused to name him their starting quarterback.

At times throughout last season, it had appeared that Patriots fans had preferred back-up Bailey Zappe, who had played in relief of Jones when he had been injured, with the rookie playing well under tough circumstances.

And with Jones himself being visibly frustrated with the Patriots last season, there are many signs to point to which could suggest a move away from the franchise. However, that move might not be a popular one for those within the locker room.

Long-time NFL reporter Mike Giardi has suggested that a number of Patriots players believe in Jones, and would not like to see him moved.: "While I'm tweeting about Patriots draft, I'll add this on Mac Jones - he has a ton of support in the locker room (outside is a different story) & teammates have appreciated his steadfast desire to make this offense better & himself better this offseason. Taking accountability."

This report also backs up Patriots ascending pass-rusher Josh Uche's quotes, who also stated that he wants Jones to remain as their starting quarterback. Uche told Good Morning Football: "When it comes to Mac, I love Mac. I mean, he's a competitor. Somebody who I've gone to war with and practiced with.

"I've seen his work ethic and his tenacity. I think he's a dog. That's me personally, having worked with Mac and knowing what I know about him. Listen, he's a dog. That's all I can say, man. He's our quarterback." It is unclear what the Patriots would be able to receive for Jones on the trade market, but in order to acquire Levis, they might have to move up in the draft.
