TEAM NEEDS

Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports

Wide Receiver

The Patriots could desperately use some help at receiver. Outside of Julian Edelman, the group is rather devoid of talent. Josh Gordon is still suspended indefinitely and Chris Hogan and Cordarrelle Patterson both departed in free agency. The Patriots must address this weakness early and add another playmaker to Tom Brady’s arsenal.

Defensive Tackle

With the losses of both Malcolm Brown and Danny Shelton in free agency, the Patriots could use more talent on the interior. Lawrence Guy and Adam Butler are both solid players who can contribute but adding an interior pass rusher to drive the pocket could go a long way for this defense.

Tight End

With the retirement of Rob Gronkowski, the Patriots have a gaping hole at tight end. Dwayne Allen also left in free agency which leaves another hole in terms of depth. Adding Austin Seferian-Jenkins is a good player who should fit in well with Brady but adding one of the athletic receiving tight ends in this class ti the mix would go a long way.

Defensive Back

The Patriots have a solid defensive back core featuring players such as Stephon Gilmore, Devin McCourty, and JC Jackson. The problem, outside of JAckson, is that their entire core of players is either close to or over the age of 30. The Patriots should strongly consider adding another defensive back in this draft class.

Defensive End

You can never have enough pass rushers in the NFL. Even after adding Michael Bennett in a trade with the Eagles this offseason, the Patriots should look to improve their pass rush. They do have two syoung players in Derek Rivers and Deatrich Wise Jr but they should still look to add to the position depending on how the draft board falls on draft night.

TOP TARGETS

Brian Westerholt-USA TODAY Sports

Deebo Samuel | WR | South Carolina

The biggest traits that the Patriots value in their receivers are the ability to separate through route running and the ability to make plays after the catch. Samuel is both of those things. An excellent route runner who is like a running back after the catch, Samuel would be an excellent fit for the Patriots.

Dawson Knox | TE | Ole Miss

An athletic tight end flying under the radar due to being misused in college? Sounds like a perfect fit for Josh McDaniels’ offense. Knox would pair well with Austin Seferian-Jenkins as they would form a comfortable duo for Tom Brady to use in the next few years of his career.

Dre’Mont Jones | DL | Ohio State

Another player criminally flying under the radar is Dre’Mont Jones of Ohio State. He is an excellent pass rusher who excels at shooting gaps and getting to the quarterback. With the Patriots already having a few run stuffers on the interior, adding a guy like Jones who could sub in and provide a steady pass rush would be an excellent addition.
