New Edinburgh three-day festival will celebrate cinema, theatre and live music

A three-day festival in Edinburgh featuring live music, cinema and conversation will take be held next month.

In a different setting to most festivals, Leith's Biscuit Factory will host the event, with plenty entertainment and activities planned throughout the three days.

The event is being titled 'Pics n Mix' and is being brought to customers by LeithLate, a local charity responsible for various public art projects. It will take place from November 19-21.

Kicking off the festival on Friday 19 November, an archive screening of Lucy Enfield's 1990 short doc 'The X in Scotland', examining the influence of Malcom X in Scotland. Followed by a Q&A hosted by Intercultural Youth Scotland with co-writer and musician Joseph Malik.

There will also be a showing of the 2021 BAFTA-nominated Leith-shot short film 'Harmonic Spectrum', which follows local musician Sean Logan as he uses the piano to navigate through life on the Autistic Spectrum. A showing of the euphoric Scottish rave culture movie 'Beats' will be shown on the big screen, with a live DJ set capping off an eventful day.

On Saturday 20 November, events will include a chat with Edinburgh's LGBTQ+ founders, twinned with a viewing of STV's 1983 documentary about gay life in Scotland.

A screening of the hard-hitting 'Choose Life' will take place, examining how Edinburgh made it through a difficult period of being labelled 'the aids capital of Europe'. Kirsten Adamson will then lighten the mood with a live music performance, including some new tracks.

Wrapping up the event on Sunday November 21, a family-friendly screening of 'Oran Na Mara' will be shown, proceeded by some Edinburgh short films. An archive screening of 'Leithers' will also be shown, followed by an informal chat about Leith's past, present and future with Alistair Scott.

LeithLate founder, Morvern Cunningham said: "I'm delighted with the multi-arts programme Erin and I have put together for LeithLate's upcoming 3-day event Pics n Mix. Leithers of all kinds will be represented on screen and on stage at the Biscuit Factory, and I'm really proud to have had a part in bringing this to life.

"Programming the films for Pics n Mix has been a total joy, with the resulting programme a personal love letter from me to Leith, and to LeithLate. I hope that lots of Leithers (and non-Leithers) come out to celebrate our wee part of the world, which, like everywhere else in the last 18 months, has had to 'persevere' - like Leith's motto!"

Tickets go on sale at 12pm today (Friday 29 November) on the LeithLate website and are priced on a pay-what-you-want sliding scale.
