New Edinburgh restaurant pop-up aims to make stew cool again with their hearty dishes

Stews have an unfair reputation - they're often thought of as brown soupy dinners dished up by your nan when in fact they can be a hug in a bowl when served correctly.

So, if you think stews are a bit out of fashion, it's time to think again as 'inclusive eating' Edinburgh pop-up Stewed is about to make the hearty dish cool again.

Mike Davis and business partner Lauren Cahill are the duo behind Stewed - a new Edinburgh takeaway restaurant hidden behind a discreet red door in Bruntsfield.

The pair are creating healthy and tasty takes on the classic dish, with all of their menu options completely free from the UK's top 14 allergens.

The idea of 'inclusive eating' is at the heart of what Stewed are hoping to achieve as Mike told Edinburgh Live: "A while ago I started having to cater for someone with multiple dietary requirements and I realised what a challenge it was - even trying to find something for the supermarket let alone a takeaway or delivery service.

"This keen awareness of people with these sort of requirements brought about our 'inclusive' eating ethos and I started chatting with my now-business partner Lauren and we developed a menu that anyone can eat from."

But why stew? Lauren explained: "We wanted something that we could be really flexible with, so given all these restrictions we knew that we needed something that was a little more unusual.

"But actually, stews are something that massively underrated and underserved - you can do so much with them and make them so tasty using the best and also unusual ingredients.

"Stews allow us to stay seasonal as we can substitute ingredients as we move through the year.

"Stews are something that people with multiple allergies can't normally eat so we wanted to fix that and create a hearty, wholesome meal that usually when they're out and about can't get normally."

With classic beef, Moroccan lamb, Korean jackfruit on the menu (all served with generous portions of chips), you can visit Stewed Edinburgh at 21 Leven St (right next to Scotmid) every weekend from this weekend - they'll be open from 1-7 today (Saturday) and 1-4 on Sunday.
