New Edinburgh nursing home plans to turn abandoned building into huge house

Controversial plans to create a residential property at an old Edinburgh nursing home include an extension to the building.

The City of Edinburgh Council decided in 2019 that the care home at Morningside Drive could undergo a change and create a residential property but there were a raft of complaints on the planning application.

Now the developers have submitted another application to the council to create two separate extensions to the building and this was validated on Friday October 8.

The new proposal is for a single storey side extension to the west for a workshop and garage and a part single part two storey rear extension.

However, locals are unhappy and have objected on two previous proposals for the property.

In the first application to the council’s planning department there were 68 objections from furious locals.

And on the successful 2019 planning application, over 30 local residents in the upmarket neighbourhood objected, fearful that the new design would detract from the favour of the existing homes in Morningside.

One said: “Although this property is not a listed building building, it is in a conservation area and was designed by one of Edinburgh’s prominent architects of the period. I consider it should be protected from unsympathetic development. My specific objections are as follows: The proposed extension is disproportionally large with a flat roof, mismatched windows and rendered walls that are out of character with the existing building.”

Another added: “The proposed flat roof extension to the rear is not in character with either the design or the character of the property and the proposed shed/workshop likewise.

“These plans appear to be more appropriate for a modern or new build property.”

The City of Edinburgh Council are expected to make a decision on the latest planning bid in the coming weeks.
