New Edinburgh low emission zone in city centre backed by councillors

Plans to create a low emission zone in Edinburgh city centre have been backed by neighbouring councillors after a proposed 'outer ring' zone was scrapped

West Lothian Council Executive this week approved a formal response to the City of Edinburgh Council’s preferred Low Emission Zone (LEZ) proposal, supporting their plans for establishing a zone covering the city centre only.

The scheme aims to reduce traffic and improve air quality, goals supported by West Lothian Council.

Initial proposals for an inner and outer ring of qualifying zones had raised concern among West Lothian councillors however, who feared it would cause problems for regular commuters to the city.

Executive councillor for the environment Tom Conn said: “I am pleased that we can support our neighbours in the City of Edinburgh Council with their Low Emission Zone proposal for the city centre.

“The removal of plans for an outer cordon means we can fully back their proposals, which should be an important step forward in tackling congestion and improving air quality in the city centre.

“We also welcome that the proposals will be applied consistently to both Edinburgh and non-Edinburgh residents, with exemptions in place for blue badge holders and emergency vehicles.”

That was echoed by Winchburn and Broxburn Tory councillor Chris Horne who told the meeting the changes to the plans removed a lot of anxiety felt by blue badge holders he had spoken to.
