New Edinburgh 'green corridor' will connect Union Canal and Roseburn with cycle route

Work is set to begin on a new Edinburgh 'green corridor' that will be formed by connecting disused parts of land between two busy areas in the capital.

The route will start at Roseburn and conclude at the Union Canal, making it more accessible for both pedestrians and cyclists and transform it into a public space as part of the council's £12.5million project.

Work will begin on January 30 with the announcement coming over a year ago. Construction is expected to run until April 2024 with the scheme split into three different sections - Sauchiebank Gardens, Duff Street Woodland and Dalry Community Park.

Amongst improvements are two new bridges crossing over the Mid Calder railway line and Dalry Road leading to Dalry Community Park, community gardens at Sauchiebank and Duff Street and upgrades to the sports pitch and playpark at Dalry Community Park, designs for which were developed in consultation with Dalry Primary School pupils.

The route is expected to play a bit part in making parts of the city more accessible for the public, delivering a 4-metre wide pedestrian and cycle path connecting the North Edinburgh Path Network to Fountainbridge, as well as new crossings and access points.

The council say a planning strategy will incorporate underused and largely inaccessible areas of woodland, helping to create healthier and more diverse woodland with longer-term opportunities.

Councillor Scott Arthur, Transport and Environment Convener, said: "This project will transform the route between Roseburn and the Union Canal, where disused and inaccessible areas will become welcoming, green community spaces encouraging biodiversity and play.

"It will also plug a gap in the city’s active travel network by providing a high-quality pedestrian and cycle path between Fountainbridge and the extremely popular North Edinburgh Path Network, as well as leading to the City Centre West to East Link, which is currently under construction.

"We’ll do everything we can to minimise disruption over the coming year and we’ll continue to keep residents up to date as we progress the scheme."
