New Edinburgh 'gathering space' will have markets, a stage and a growing area

The City of Edinburgh Council are planning a new multi-use community public space.

The new redevelopment space, ‘Walk-Up Avenue,’ aims to bring people from all walks of life together in Craigmillar.

The project will provide commercial units aimed at small businesses and a space for people to meet outdoors in the town centre.

The project will utilise an unused gap site in the heart of Craigmillar and is part of wider programme of regeneration investment in the area.

Walk up Avenue will feature two shops, public artwork forming the site entranceway, a stage pavilion, an outdoor space for markets, events and activities, a growing area and a connection to existing playpark Vista Park.

The funding necessitates that the contract be completed by Sept 20th 2021.

Although the site is owned by City of Edinburgh Council the project has been made possible by the Scottish Government Town Centres Fund.

This fund aims to enable local authorities to stimulate and support place-based economic investments which encourage town centres to diversify and flourish, creating footfall through local improvements and partnerships.

By providing outdoor gathering space, the project aims to help with physical distancing measures related to COVID-19 over summer-autumn 2021.

A Police Scotland Architectural Liaison Officer based in Edinburgh has provided recommendations for this project based on Secure by Design guidance.

It is a temporary ‘meanwhile space’ with a design life of approximately 5 years but there is scope to extend it if successful.
