New Edinburgh boxing gym launches in bid to train future stars of the sport

A new boxing club has opened in the West of Edinburgh with the aim of standing toe to toe with the big boys of boxing in Scotland.

Iron Will Boxing launched last Monday at the Crossfit Murrayfield Gym and is looking for new members to join their ranks as they look to become “the most feared gym” in the country.

The news comes off the back of a golden period of boxing for Edinburgh with both Josh Taylor and Lee McGregor becoming well known faces around the world following exceptional performances.

Chris Young along with Jason Easton - both ex- professional boxer s - are joined by trainer John Keenan in putting on classes at the gym.

Chris and Jason have hundreds of fights between them across the various levels of the sport - experience they say they are eager to pass on.

For the past year the gym has had four talented young fighters training with them from across Edinburgh and the Lothians. But Jason and Chris have been forced to train them under bridges and in public parks over the lockdown period due to the restrictions placed on boxing gyms.

Now the pair, along with John, hope to encourage newcomers to the sport in order to grow the club from the ground up and become a household name in Scottish boxing.

On the opening of the gym, Chris said: “We want to build this gym from the ground up and for people to look out for Iron Will boxing come competition and fear us.

“But beyond that we also want to create a space for newcomers to get to grips with the sport and to help people overcome physical or mental health issues.

“I suffer from a variety of mental health issues due to the head trauma I suffered as a boxer. A boxing gym is all Jason and I know. It is where we are at peace and we want to make this gym a home for everyone, a proper community.”

Throughout their opening session, Chris, Jason and John emphasised the importance of leaving egos at the door and made it clear that arrogance would not be tolerated within the four walls of the gym.

Each attendee was given their own personal workout plan that matched their abilities and fitness.

Throughout the demonstrations, Chris methodically broke down each action and ensured that all those taking part were able to do so confidently.

Both John and Jason were floating in the background, ensuring that anyone who needed an extra hand was afforded one.

The proposed class timetable is Mon, Wed and Fri 6-9pm and Sunday 10-12am.

The initial breakdown of the classes, which are subject to change depending on demand, are: 6pm – kids: 7pm – teens: 8pm – adults.

Then at the weekend, they will have 10am – kids/teens class: 11am – adults’ class.

Their current prices are £50 per month, which allows for members to train up to 4 times per week.

The club through an app called Wodify, which will allow users to see the workouts, book into classes as well as track their progress and performance.

To sign up for membership, please contact the club with your full name, DOB, contact number, address.

From there they will get in touch to arrange payment and emergency contact details.
