New Edinburgh Aldi stores on the way as 100 more supermarkets set to open across UK

Aldi is looking to open new stores across Edinburgh as part of a plan to launch 100 additional branches in the UK.

Over the next two years, the budget chain plans to invest £1.3 billion in expanding its real estate as it continues to push ahead with its goal to open on average one new store every week.

It stated that it was in particular looking for "freehold town-centre or edge-of-centre sites" on which to develop.

No one area in Edinburgh is of particular interest, but rather Aldi is looking to open new branches across the capital as part of its expansion plans.

The supermarket said it wanted sites that are big enough to accommodate a 20,000 sq ft store and around 100 dedicated parking spaces, ideally on a prominent main road and with good visibility and access.

In addition, Aldi will also be investing in the development of new and expanded distribution centres.

Richard Thornton, Communications Director at Aldi UK, said: "We’re continuing to gain even more customers - with over 60% of UK households shopping with Aldi in the last year.

“Our focus is on expanding our store estate, making sure Aldi is accessible to as many of these new shoppers across the country as possible."

He added: "Looking ahead, we are excited to provide millions of new customers with access to Aldi’s award-winning quality and unbeatable value as we create even more places and more ways to shop with us.”

Elsewhere in Scotland, the chain is looking to launch new stores in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Aberdeen, Stirling, Inverclyde, and more.
