New Economics Party leader Mingkwan Sangsuwan has confirmed the party's intention to join the Pheu Thai Party in setting up a coalition government.

Mr Mingkwan said on Wednesday he had told Pheu Thai secretary-general Phumchai Wechayachai by phone on Tuesday that the party would join Pheu Thai's campaign to take the lead in forming a government.

The absence of Mr Mingkwan at the press conference on Wednesday to announce the "democratic front" coalition raised eyebrows. The party did not sign an agreement with six other parties to "end the prolonged power" of the National Council for Peace and Order.

Mr Mingwkwan said he had to go to the Election Commission to check the MP seats that the New Economics Party is expected to receive from the election.

He was seen with party-list candidate Suppadit Arkatruek at the EC office at the same time Pheu Thai was holding the press conference to unveil its allies.

Mr Mingkwan was the commerce minister when the People Power Party linked to former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra was in power.

"I am a person who keeps his word and maintains his political stance," he posted on his Facebook account on Tuesday.

The New Economics Party did not win any constituency MP seats but is projected to receive six seats in the party-list category from the unofficial poll results released so far.
