New eco campsite to be built in Pentland Hills as parking charges introduced

A new eco-style campsite is hoped be constructed at Harlaw Reservoir to discourage disruptive groups from setting up camp.

The site has been favoured by councillors after a series of issues in the Pentland Hills over the last year.

With frequent incidents of almost entire campsites being left behind, it is believed that the new official site would allow more controlled behaviour.

This week, the Pentland Hills Regional Park Joint Committee agreed that the area next to Harlaw House at the reservoir would be an ideal location.

Grants and funding is now being sourced for the project, which would see a shower and toilet block also constructed.

According to the Edinburgh Reporter, committee convener, Neil Gardiner, had urged that similar developments elsewhere had helped with any antisocial behaviour.

In recent months, Edinburgh Live has reported multiple incidents where tents, chairs, rubbish and other unsanitary items had been dumped in the hills during the pandemic.

With this expected to continue as the warmer months approach again, the committee has chosen to take action.

The committee has also chosen to introduce parking charges at a series of points around the Pentland Hills to reduce the number of cars and congestion at the sites.

With the funds to go towards the upkeep of the hills, changes may also be made to the layouts of some of the car parks to allow for safe parking and blue badge spaces.

Looking to the future, the committee has also decided to look into creating a further selection of walkways to connect nearby areas to the hills and avoid the need to drive there.
