New Dumbarton waterfront walkway linking town and castle takes step forward

The first phase of preparations for a new waterfront walkway linking Dumbarton Castle and town centre have been completed.

Clearance work that involved the removal of old structures, demolition waste, low quality vegetation and invasive species took place to the west side of Dumbarton Football Club’s stadium and along the east bank of the Leven towards the tidal basin (pictured right) between September and October.

The foreshore was also regraded with new materials to make it more suitable for walking as well as enhancing its look, with work being delivered by landowners Culross and Lidl at two sections of the site which were formerly owned by Ballantines.

Turnberry Homes and Dumbarton Football Club will work in cooperation with the council to deliver the remaining sections.

When complete the waterfront walkway will provide continuous public access to the foreshore of the Leven for the first time in 150 years - with plans having been in the pipeline for over six years.

And councillor Iain McLaren, convener of Infrastructure, regeneration and economic development at West Dunbartonshire Council believes the regeneration will have a positive impact locally.

He said: “When complete the waterfront path will not only give residents and visitors access to the River Leven that hasn’t been available in more than a century, it will also link our historical attractions to the town centre, bringing with it the benefits of additional footfall and custom to our local businesses.”

Whilst councillor Marie McNair added: “I am pleased plans for the waterfront path are progressing and I look forward to further work being done to facilitate it.”

She said: “The waterfront path will make a huge difference to this area and attract visitors to the area to take in the spectacular views we have to offer.”
