New drive-thru Costa Coffee set to open in Oldham

A new drive-thru coffee shop is set to open in Oldham later this year, as a £35m project moves forward.

Costa Coffee will open a new drive-thru at the Hollinwood Junction site, a 30-acre development set to create 760 jobs for the borough.

Work has started on the new caffeination station, which is set to be handed over to the firm in October.

Along with the new coffee shop, £2m of work to clear the derelict site has also started, to allow the rest of the work to begin.

Previously occupied by a large redundant gas holder, the site has to be cleared properly before new work can begin.

I&H Brown, the firm behind the £2m works, expects to finish this work by July this year.

Coun Arooj Shah, leader of Oldham Council, said: “It’s great to see construction start on the next phase of this important regeneration project which will deliver more jobs for our communities when they are much-needed.

“We’ll continue to work with our partners to unlock investment in Oldham and deliver our Creating a Better Place regeneration strategy to maximise our borough’s potential and create opportunities for all.”

The Hollinwood Junction site, near junction 22 of the M60, is expected to create hundreds of jobs for local people when it’s finished.

Retail, leisure, and employment facilities will be created on the site, along with up to 150 family homes.

The site has previously been called a “key gateway” to the town centre, due to its proximity to the centre of Oldham, and access to the M60.

John Downes, group chief executive of Langtree, the developer working with Oldham Council to rejuvenate the site, added: “Milestones such as this send a strong signal about our intent and our focus on delivering the Hollinwood Junction scheme.”
