New dolphin footage off Irish coast fuels speculation Fungie could be alive

A video has emerged of a friendly dolphin performing in front of a small audience at Galway Bay - leading many to question if it could be Fungie.

In the video captured by Steve Sweeney, a small boat drifts on the water when suddenly a lone dolphin flips about 12 feet into the air.

Although it is unlikely that the dolphin is the much loved Fungie, it hasn't stopped speculation on social media that the famous Dingle native has 'resurrected' from the dead.

One user on social media said: "This is very like fungi... can we tag the Relevant people to confirm if it is our isn’t? Fingers crossed it is."

While another commented "He looks a bit younger/more spry. What a beauty. I do miss Fungie, though I'm sure after so many decades he also deserved his rest/retirement he had well earned if he needed to go seek a final peace. Love dolphins."

It would also align with the "glimmer of hope" a leading dolphin expert offered to the people of Dingle back in November.

Dr Simon Berrow, a lecturer at Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology and a member of the institute's Marine and Freshwater Research Centre, said there have been cases in recent times when Irish dolphins who were presumed dead have shown up in two Kerry bays.

Dr Berrow, who has been studying bottlenose dolphins in the Shannon estuary for nearly 30 years, said he and his team have recently discovered that dolphins they thought were dead have actually moved to Brandon and Tralee Bay.

The Dingle legend has been missing since early November with few concrete answers given since his disappearance.
